Biography & CV

Galina Chehirian graduated from the National Academy of Art in Sofia in 1981, where she studied with Marin Varbanov. She is among the few Bulgarian artists who has consistently experimented with unusual techniques and materials.

Her practice unfolds in the uncanny spaces between mediums and materials spanning wood, glass, canvas and paper.

Her sculptural work of the 1980s overflowed the bounds of form, embodying painting, found objects, and textiles.

In 1988, Chehirian moved to New York. There, she experimented with glass and revived Verre Eglomise, a technique for painting on glass known since the Renaissance. In its 20-year life, her studio was a leading name in painted glass, represented by over 50 galleries across the United States.

Her newest body of work brings her practice of interruption and transfiguration into the realm of painting. Across multimedia canvases of wood, paper and acrylic, she assembles metaphysical landscapes that unsettle the boundaries between interior and exterior—appearing at once as maps of spaces and maps of the psyche.

Her paintings and monotypes convey a sense of opposition to horizons near and distant, with fragmented motifs and a sense of duality, creating meditative harmonies through color and composition.

Chehirian currently lives between Sofia and Florida.
